MDIS provided a professional audiovisual setup for a Gymnasium/Theater hybrid space in a private charter preparatory academy located in Detroit, MI. The school was looking for a professional audiovisual solution that could be used during workouts and physical education classes, for sound as well as training audio tracks. Furthermore, the school wanted stereo audio for theater performances and a video system that was “large scale” but also could be “out of the way” too. MDIS was contacted regarding designing an audiovisual system for the dual purpose space, that would meet the needs of theater instructors and gym teachers alike.
A major concern of our customer was not having a projector screen / projector / or pendant speakers that could be hit with flying balls and objects; as they suspected these would be “targets” for those students that are up to no good. To address this fear, MDIS utilized a “rear projection” setup to keep the projector out of the gymnasium ceiling. “Rear projection” is ideal for presentations where the projector is mounted behind a semi transparent screen that is “thrown” toward the viewer. The image is “flipped” and “inverted” accordingly in real time, so that when viewing it it appears correctly.
MDIS utilized a Kramer RC-74DL 12-Button Master Room Controller with Digital Volume Knob to allow the customer to drop the screen, raise the screen, power on the system, change sources, and adjust the volume of the system with ease. JBL CBT70J-1 High-Power J-Shaped Column Array Speakers were utilized to create robust and filling sound throughout the area (...but not too loud as to bother the other teachers during the school day). The custom Kramer keypad controls an audiovisual system operates a Crown Drivecore CDI amplifier, DBX Digital Sound Processor (DSP), Shure Brothers Microphone System, and a variety of “inputs” such as a DVD player and an “in room PC.” Shure SLX wireless handheld microphones with PA805SWB Passive Directional Antenna(s) were outfitted in the gym to combat the giant space to ensure high-quality sound would be provided at all times. A DSP / Mixer were utilized to connect together the clients existing microphones, and wireless microphones as well as their projector cart and Gym teacher’s mobile device bluetooth connection. A tab tensioned motorized ceiling mounted Draper rear projection screen was illuminated using a Hitachi Laser Projector that was mounted on a cinder block wall, in the back of the “theater area” adjacent to the gymnasium.
MDIS is proud to help these Detroit elementary school students exercise, compete, dance, perform, relax, and engage with one another using this innovative audiovisual rear projection and speaker setup.
